Giovanni Verga

GIOVANNI VERGA was born in Catania, Sicily in 1840. He was one of the greatest exponents of Realism in Italian literature and remains one of Italy's most important novelists and dramatists. During the period 1865 to 1893 he spent much of his time in the north (Florence, Milan, and Rome), and then returned to Catania.

He died on January 24, 1922, in the house in which he was born. Among his best known works are I Malavoglia (1881), Novelle Rusticane (1883), and Maestro Don Gesualdo (1889).
